What to do on the big island
This is Hawaii, the biggest island out of the 8 main islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. Also known as the ‘big island’, it is famous for being the home of the most active volcano in the world - Mount Kilauea, AND the tallest volcano in the world - Mount Kea. But most importantly to us, this is one of the best places in the world to see manta rays.
This is our third attempt to dive/snorkel with manta rays: once in Bali, Indonesia and once in Maui, Hawaii. After two failed attempts, and thanks to all of our followers’ suggestions, we were finally able to see these gentle giants on the big island of Hawaii.
If you’re like us and only have a few days on the big island, here are some tips:
Where to stay?
In the small town of Kona in an Airbnb. This town on the west coast of Hawaii is a great base spot to explore the island from. Kona is also where the manta ray night dives take place.
How to get around?
Hire a car through Turo car hire (the airbnb of cars). This seems to be the most affordable way of hiring a car in Hawaii.
Once you’ve got your car, use the GyPSy Guides App to DIY a full island tour. If you’re like us and not really the type to go on tours with local guides, but you still enjoy learning about a specific destination, GyPSy Guides is a great alternative.
